Introduction to my background, interests, and passion for learning.
Hi, I'm Xavier Matthew R. Pedregosa from AM9! I'm currently 18 years old. Most of my friends call me Xavier whereas my relatives refer to me as Matt or MatMat. I'm kinda shy at first when it comes to connecting with other people so I consider myself to be introverted though I'm always open to the idea of making new friends and connections by starting convos to go outside my comfort zone! I also like staying inside my house more so that I can focus on my hobbies or other assignments since the outside tends to be socially exhausting for me. Though if we're going to a restaurant to eat, I would 99/100 times say YES!!!!!!!!!!
I find myself dividing my attention to the most random hobbies such as stationary, cubing, pen spinning, etc. All the way to programming, math, video games, etc. Another notable trait of myself is that I consider myself to be open-minded to different perspectives and topics that I talk about with other people.
What drives my passion for learning is simply the satisfaction I get in the pursuit of knowledge and learning in and of itself. I tend to value questions more than answers because it breeds curiosity, subjective interpretation, and different ways of thinking.
Today, I shall guide you throughout my progress / wonderful journey throughout this course! And that includes how I changed physically, sexually, culturally, digitally, materially, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually! (That's quite a lot)
This section includes how I changed in each dimension of the self.
How I grew, developed, and matured physically.
Reflection: In this lesson, we discussed how we evolved and grew up physically throughout the years from childhood up to teen years. We additionally also discussed a bit on how exactly our body works. Why do we look like this? Why do we age? What are the many other factors that affect how we look?
How sexuality, gender identity, and intimate relationships affect my upbringing and development as a person.
Reflection: This lesson tends to be a bit err awkward and becomes super personal… so the first time I experienced attraction was around grade 4-6? And back then love / attraction were pretty silly concepts to me. So much so that I kept trying to ignore it completely...

How culture, traditions, and values shaped my identity.
Reflection: This lesson is about how my environmental upbringing, cultural backgrounds, and traditions shape my upbringing. Culture is one of those factors that is certainly outside of my, and everyone else’s control and is guaranteed to change us.
How my identity changes due to social media and close interconnectedness of technology.
Reflection: The good thing about this is that my parents, relatives, and friends can contact me from all across the globe so long as they have some sort of broadband connection. So in times of emergency or if ever in times of loneliness, reaching out has never been easier with technology.
How my possessions, resources, gifts, and my economic status affects my identity.
Reflection: I’m not a super materialistic person, but I do recognize the value and worth of what I buy and what is given to me. Most of the time I’m pretty practical about the things I buy, excluding my collection of cards or board games hahaha 😆... ⤵️
How cognition, intelligence, and learning processes define my identity.
Reflection: Let me recall our first and only face-to-face meeting in this subject. So I think this was the second game or so and everyone was tasked to create a circle. So the rules of the game were that you sir (professor Castillo) would count upwards starting from 1. Every time it was a multiple of 7, we would clap. So at first it was pretty easy, we had a test run and everyone seems to be managing well.
How emotions, feelings, and emotional regulation affect my identity.
Reflection: We had an activity from senior high school during personal development class. We would write our names on a piece of pad paper and then two columns: positive or negative. On the positive column, you write what you think is the person’s best positive trait and on the other column, their worst negative trait. On the positive column, about 90% of people wrote chill on the positive column as my main positive trait when describing me. Though on the negative side they mostly wrote that I’m shy.
How religion, God, searching for purpose, connecting with nature affect my identity.
Reflection: I was baptized as a child and considered as a Roman Catholic. Today, I still am. My family is a big factor why I am Christian and why I should still retain my identity as a Christian. Every so often we would go to Church and practice other Catholic traditions. Such as praying the 3 o’clock prayer every day, praying after waking up and before sleeping, as well as occasionally performing the rosary every now and then. I follow these traditions most of the time though I have vastly different beliefs compared to Catholicism.
Rating and feedback on GED101 - Understanding the Self
Overall, I would rate this course as a 9.59/10! I actually really like your teaching style when it comes to our online classes and it is unfortunate that we only had one face-to-face meeting. I can confidently say that I understand myself more after taking understanding the self 😱 you’re also pretty knowledgeable about the topics that we were talking about and our activities were really engaging and self-reflective! One of the few things I didn’t particularly like about this course was the sexual self since it made me feel a bit awkward or uncomfortable. I also would’ve liked it if we had more face-to-face meetings so that we could have more activities and lessons since I feel like this subject would’ve been way more interesting with F2F recitation and discussing the interesting things we talked about throughout modules 1 & 2. Though overall, despite those caveats, I believe you and your subject was still enjoyable for me and I hope the same can be said for my other classmates from AM9!
